Business Life in the Field of Design

Çınar Topaloğlu: Could you please tell us about your carrier path until this position, what were the milestones in your career?

Murat Tüzüm: I graduated from Kocaeli University, Department of Physics. My career began by chance at an Autodesk dealer developing plug-ins on Autocad with a team of 7-8 people in 1999. Then, life brought me to Autodesk again 15-20 years later, and I work at Autodesk now.

 One of the milestones in my career is that I got my master's degree in business management. I did not know much about the concepts such as economy and finance when I graduated. However, issues such as management, communication, and cooperation constitute important criteria of business life. Thanks to my master's degree in business administration, I had the opportunity to learn all this within an academic framework. My academic background contributed a lot to my career journey. Another milestone was my transfer to IBM Turkey, one of the largest technology companies in the world. I did not work very long at IBM, but I made very long-lasting friendships, relationships, and networks. They later provided many benefits for me in my career.

 

Çınar Topaloğlu: Would you recommend young people who dream of becoming managers today to have an MBA degree?

Murat Tüzüm: I think it would not be very efficient to graduate from university and have a master's degree in business administration without ever experiencing business life. I advise young people to gain field experience first, then move on to the academic phase.

Çınar Topaloğlu: What should be the first steps of the people who want to work in the design and manufacturing field? Is it a competence-oriented industry or a technical knowledge-oriented industry?

Murat Tüzüm: The world has been developing even faster than before and what I say today will not be valid in the near future. However, I can recommend everyone to go after the job they love, enjoy, and are passionate about. It is because no matter how much the world changes if you do a job with passion and love, you get success. I think the most important thing in business is to be able to empathize... To be able to understand the other person, to be able to work with him/her and people on common ground, and to adapt to changing conditions... These issues were valid a thousand years ago, and I am sure that they will be valid a thousand years later as well...

Developments in the Field of Design Today

Çınar Topaloğlu: What is Autodesk's vision for today and the future? What kind of innovation do you expect in the field of design in the future?

Murat Tüzüm: Our vision is to offer software tools that will contribute to our millions of users around the world to design a better world. The most important criterion we consider when implementing this vision is sustainability... If the manufacturer can manufacture a product with a less negative impact on the environment, this contributes to a better world. If a building with a lower carbon emission can be designed using elements such as natural ventilation and natural lighting, this will also contribute to a better world. Türkiye is in an earthquake zone. If we can construct more earthquake-resistant buildings, that means a better world.

Çınar Topaloğlu: Why do we migrate to cloud technology, what are the advantages of this technology for us?

Murat Tüzüm: I would like to discuss this subject, access to software, with a social concept such as democratizing. Until very recently, advanced technology was available to the minority, such as Autodesk and similar companies, which could do the good things that I have just mentioned. It is because having advanced technologies requires a high cost. When a certain minority accesses these technologies, the impact becomes so small.

 

We want to offer access to a much wider audience to the software by migrating our products to the platform. We offer Autodesk solutions to university students, start-up companies, and start-up programs free of charge, as well as to millions of commercial enterprises for an affordable cost such as USD 500. Thus, the impact of our solutions on the world becomes much greater.

 

Design for Manufacturing

“The involvement of artificial intelligence (AI) in design opens the door to exciting developments”

Çınar Topaloğlu: What kind of developments were experienced in mechanical design applications for manufacturing?

Murat Tüzüm:  With the introduction of 3D technologies, the concept of desktop factories has emerged. With the availability of 3D technologies at every house and every desk, manufacturing has not been at the monopoly of only a certain minority that can make a large investment, it has been spreading out and offering better results. This was one of the most significant developments. However, the main point I want to focus on is the developments we have experienced with the involvement of artificial intelligence in design...

 

Generative design, which means design for manufacturing or design using artificial intelligence really excites me. Generative design refers to a productive design research process. In this process, designers or engineers specify the values of parameters such as design objectives, as well as performance or space requirements, materials, manufacturing methods, and cost constraints, using the design software. In line with the specified values, artificial intelligence evaluates many options much faster than human intelligence and offers a certain number of options to the designer. For example, if a lighter but more durable aircraft seat compared to its counterparts is needed, artificial intelligence evaluates many options much faster than human intelligence and offers the most effective solutions.

Çınar Topaloğlu: Is it manufacturing for design or design for manufacturing?

Murat Tüzüm: In the traditional manufacturing process, design and manufacturing follow each other. However, in these successive serial processes, data losses, communication disconnections, and misunderstandings might occur while progressing from one stage to another. Therefore, the design loses its spirit and the manufacturing processes become inefficient. In order to prevent this, creating an integrated design and manufacturing model, where the data is at the center and different work units can work simultaneously around it, is very important.

 

Çınar Topaloğlu: What are your opinions about Tridi's business model and processes?

Murat Tüzüm: I discovered Tridi when it started its journey with 3D printing solutions. I have been following you closely ever since. At this point, I see that you have actually turned into an innovative platform by including other manufacturing methods. Beyond just being a marketplace that connects the manufacturer and the customer, you also provide consultancy services on design for manufacturability. I think your performance has been pioneering the Turkish industry and manufacturing industries. You have become a value-added platform. I follow you excitedly. Hava a succesful journey!
